Have you ever wonde red if a life without problems is possible? Or why life is so difficult and full of problems?
Is there a way to solve them, or do we just have to suffer them and that is that?
Gnostic psychology gives us precise tools for us to use in our lives so that we can move towards true peace and freedom, which begin in ourselves. For these begin within ourselves.
First of all we must differentiate between events and problems.
From the Gnostic point of view, events are all the circumstances that happen to us. They are external and beyond our control. Here are some examples: the weather, the traffic, delayed public transport, the way others treat us, the price of food, the performance of our favourite team, something in our house breaking down, and so on. In short, everything in our lives that happens to us “from the outside”.
The events themselves are neither good nor bad. They are simply things that happen to us. How we deal with it, therein lies the “problem”.
A problem is a mental form with two poles, one positive and one negative. To clarify: a mental form is something that has no reality. It is a fantasy without substance.
You may ask yourselves: how can this be? My problem, this terrible situation I am going through that keeps me awake, that nearly prevents me from eating, that doesn’t allow me to enjoy myself, that every time I remember it… it makes me sad; how can it not be real? Well, let’s explain.
So, problems are mental forms that are held in the mind. And their “reality” is because the mind is locked into that fantasy. Furthermore, worrying about them not only does not solve the problems, but damages the mind and the brain.
Let’s take a concrete example: a person does not have the money to pay the rent for his house, so he is going to be evicted from his home. But the concrete event is one thing, the problem is another. This situation may or may not be one we can solve, it may be that there is a real possibility of eviction. Nonetheless this is an opportunity to learn not to solve, but to dissolve problems.
As the oriental proverb says:
If your problem has a solution, why are you worrying? And if it doesn’t… why are you worrying?
Let us be clear that worrying about paying the rent will not raise the money we need. Doing something about it will. Gravitating all day around the problem in our minds, endlessly thinking about it, does not solve it. On the contrary, it robs us of the clarity we need to dissolve it.
Part of dissolving the problem is to forget about it, or rather, not to think or worry about it.
In our psychological reality we can distinguish three fundamental aspects in our ways of reacting to events. These are: with thought, with emotion and with action.
Gnostic Wisdom calls these aspects our brains; the thinking brain, the emotional brain and the motor brain. Our vitality is divided into thirds within each of these.
Whenever we attempt to solve problems, we do it from the partial vision of one of these brains. And because it is incomplete, it does not provide the solution to the problem.
To dissolve the problem, to forget it, is to move away from the incomplete vision of one brain and to shift our attention to the other brains.
In the example above, if we spend all day thinking about how we can’t pay the rent, we will never actually raise the money to pay the rent. Instead, it will drain our energy and our ability to come up with new and innovative ways to solve the situation.
When we live without fear, without projecting into the future and without the painful baggage of the past, we open the door to the many pleasant surprises that life has in store for us. And the unsolvable becomes solvable, what we once thought impossible will become as easy as drinking a glass of water.
We must learn to wisely manage the three brains; action, feeling and thinking, working in perfect balance and harmony will make us not only different than we are now, but also more energetic, with more zest for life, more capable of facing life’s events and seeking happiness in each moment.
